What Does a County Commissioner Do? 

Nine County Commissioners approve the budget for Shelby County and hire and supervise the County Manager and the County Attorney. County commissioners are public servants who are tasked with ensuring that all services for the people of Shelby County are provided efficiently and effectively.

Commissioners examine, approve, and record check register for government and proprietary funds every month.

Commissioners serve on county boards and committees as they are assigned. These include Roads and Transportation, Environmental and Natural Resources, Health Foundation, Law Enforcement Personnel Board, County and Regional Planning, and others.

Commissioners annually elect a Chairperson and approve Commission Committee Assignments

Commissioners consider and approve or reject alcohol permits or license each month

Commissioners hire and evaluate the County Manager
